Yuhu Village is an ancient village with beautiful scenery in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. It is situated at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mount, about 40 minutes driving from Lijiang Old Town. Yuhu Village is called a Sleeping Area of Lijiang. The village is famous for beautiful natural landscape, well-preserved original ecology, and cultural relics such as the Former Residence of Rock Joseph.
Yuhu Village is the last village in the Lijiang Basin at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The houses were made of a unique stone called "monkey head" by Naxi people. There is a Yuhe Lake beside the village. Water in this lake comes from melted snow of the mountains.
What captivate tourists most are the rural appearance and peaceful atmosphere among locals, as if they even aren’t affected by any visitors. You can see old wooden houses with Bird Wing Roofs – the typical of Naxi architecture style, are snaking along the endless stone alleys, dogs are sleeping on the stage, a few locals are planting at their backyards, and woman are weaving or sewing. If you keep on strolling, from house to house, towards the end of the village, you can sometimes find locals greeting to you with a smile, and quickly submerged in the vivid green fields.
You could also find some ruins situated along the stone allay, though there only left some stone foundation, some broken walls, from the meticulous carving on the stone, the large scale, you can still imagine its prospers in the past. If go in summer, you can appreciate the vast rural beauties around, jagged snow mountain, flowers blooming vibrantly, and fragrant paddies; all seemed live separated from modern life.
Another attraction is the Former Residence of Rock Joseph. Rock Joseph is called “the Father of Naxiology”. He was the first foreign discoverer of unique Naxi Culture, and the first foreign scholar to introduce Lijiang ethnic culture to the western world. He highly praised the village in his book wrote from 1920’s to 1940’s. The residence belonging to Rock Joseph consisted of three rooms.
