Grandview Park

Grandview Park, (called Daguanlou Park in Chinese) is located at the end of Daguan Road in Kunming, about 6 km from the city center. The park is facing to the Dianchi Lake. Grandview Pavilion built in 1890 is the core part of the park. The south gate of the pavilion faces to the Dianchi Lake, and the roofs of the pavilion were painted in golden, thus the pavilion looks elegant among the verdant trees.

Grandview Park got famous for the Grandview Pavilion, while the Grandview Pavilion got famous for the “longest couplet of the world”. Other famous attractions of the Grandview Park Scenic Area include the three-storied Grand View Pavilion, which provides a spectacular view across sparkling Dianchi Lake to the Western Hills; some winding corridors; Bonsai Garden with all kinds of bonsais, strange rockeries; willowed causeways in the Southern Garden; Baihuadi where you could go fishing; and arch bridges.

On both sides of the south gate situated the couplet written by Sun Ranweng (1684-1763, a famous scholar in Qing Dynasty); this couplet of 180 Chinese characters is believed to be the longest antithetical couplet in the world and one of the most valued cultural treasures of Yunnan. The first part (the right part) of the couplet describes the beautiful and magnificent natural sceneries around Kunming in an optimistic mood, while the second part (the left part) reviews the 2,000 years' history of Yunnan Area.
