Qianfo Mountain

Qianfo Mountain, also called Thousand Buddha Mountain, is one of the three must-go tourist spots in Jinan. It’s an important sacred land for Chinese Buddhists.

Since Buddhism became popular during the reign of Emperor Wen, the founder of the Sui Dynasty, this mountain had been entitled with the name “Qianfo” suggesting that hundreds of Buddha images had been carved out of the hill's rock faces; a temple Qianfosi (Thousand Buddha Temple) had been built at the foot of the mountain.

Along with the blooming of Buddhism, statues, temples and other buildings have been erected in the mountain. The most renowned one is Xingguochan Temple, built under the reign of Emperor Li Shimin, a great ruler in the Tang Dynasty, which enlarged the old Qianfosi. Further enlargements were undertaken during the Song, Ming and Qing Dynasty.

Qianfo Mountain was appointed as the province's key scenic spots in 1959. In 2005, it was assessed as the state 4A-class tourist attractions.
