Huanglong

Why is Huanglong special?


As a scenic and historic interest area in Songpan County in the northwest part of Sichuan, China, Huanglong is known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, especially in Huanglonggou (Yellow Dragon Gully), as well as diverse forest ecosystems, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and hot springs.


Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1992, Huanglong is also home to many endangered species such as the Giant Panda and the Sichuan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey.


Huanglong Highlights


Glacial revolutions, terrane structure, stratum of carbonic acid rock, tufa water and climatic conditions such as artic-alpine sun light have created the world-famous travertine landscape of Huanglong.


Huanglong Valley
Shaped like a sleeping dragon with the length of 3.6 km and a drop fall of over 400meters, Huanglong Valley presents a largest in scale and complete in structure, and is the most rarely seen in shape of Karst landform in the world.


Danyun Gorge Scenic Spot
Danyun Gorge Scenic Spot is a natural landscape consisting of abundant tree species, shrubs and grasses.


Dragon Drops
As one of a side valley in the Danyun Gorge and with the highest elevation of 3,100 meters, the Dragon Drop stretches in sinuous mountian like lying dragon.


Ancient Town of Songpan
Historically, due to its strategic location, Songpan was an important military locality. Built in the Ming Dynasty, the Ancient Town of Songpan serves as a hub connecting between Huanglong and Jiuzhai Valley, both of which are World Nature Herutage.


Zhaga Waterfall
The scenic spot stretches along for 5km, where the main waterfall and numerous small waterfalls make up a wonderful melody, accompanied with the background of evergreen trees.
