The iconic Fujian tulou—traditional rammed-earth buildings inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2008—are undergoing a major revitalization, emerging as a vibrant driver of inbound tourism through high-quality boutique homestays. In Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, historic structures like the Changrong Building have been meticulously renovated by design teams from Xiamen University. While preserving their authentic, centuries-old exteriors, these architectural wonders now feature modern amenities such as smart home technologies, premium sound insulation, and public reading spaces. This shift from basic sightseeing to experiential hospitality allows global travelers to fully immerse themselves in local heritage while enjoying modern comforts.
This wave of revitalization is also introducing creative cultural products designed to engage a younger, tech-savvy generation of international tourists. Near the well-known Huaiyuan Building in Nanjing County, a newly established intangible cultural heritage market has drawn approximately 700,000 visitors since its launch. Industry innovators are combining traditional aesthetics with modern technology, introducing souvenirs like “sound postcards” and gypsum tulou models embedded with NFC chips that play personalized travel videos when tapped by a smartphone. For participants of inbound tourism, these interactive elements bridge the gap between ancient history and contemporary lifestyles, significantly enhancing the memory of their journey through East China.
The diversification of the tulou economy is equally evident in Hua’an County, where traditional homesteads have been transformed into contemporary bamboo art galleries, specialty coffee shops, and libraries. To further capture the international market’s interest in the “experience economy,” local authorities have launched immersive “China-chic” role-playing games and nighttime intangible heritage parades, which led to a 23% year-on-year increase in ticket revenue during peak holiday seasons. By successfully transforming tulou tourism from a brief half-day excursion into a comprehensive, overnight regional destination, Fujian is setting a new benchmark for sustainable heritage preservation and enriching the landscape of inbound tourism across the region.
