Jiayuguan Great Wall

Jiayuguan Great Wall

What makes Jiayuguan Great Wall different?

Jiayuguan Great Wall, the westernmost section of the Great Wall, was added to the World Heritage List in 1987. The construction of the Jiayuguan Great Wall spans 168 years, from 1372 to 1540 during the Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644). The Jiayuguan Fort in the Jiayuguan Great Wall is the most intact and grandest fort of the Great Wall, therefore enjoying the reputation of “The First and Greatest Fort under the Heaven.” The Great Wall joins the Ancient Silk Road at the Jiayuguan Fort.

Three parts of the Jiayuguan Great Wall

The Jiayuguan Fort houses three spectacular buildings, namely Guanghua Building, Rouyuan Building, and Jiayuguan Building. The Jiayuguan Fort is a major part of and the most-visited destination in the Jiayuguan Great Wall.

First Beacon of the Great Wall is 7.5 kilometers away from the Jiayuguan Fort and was constructed in 1539. As its name suggests, the Beacon is the first beacon and the western-most starting point of the Great Wall. Its location on the summit of an 80-meter-deep valley also makes it one of the most dangerous beacons in China.

Overhanging Great Wall lies at the western part of the Jiayuguan Great Wall. Built in 1539, the Great Wall spans 7.5 kilometers and snakes its way over the top of the Black Mountain. This branch is the steepest section of the Jiayuguan Great Wall, and therefore must be a great choice for energetic visitors.

Please note that the three sites are not at the same place. And it all takes over 15 minutes to drive from one place to another.
