Qianling Mausoleum

The Tang Dynasty (618-907) is a truly fascinating period of Chinese history, not only for its high culture but also the personalities that left their mark on the epoch

Qianling Mausoleum is the joint tomb of the Tang dynasty Emperor Gaozong and his wife, Empress Wu Zetian (the only one Empress in Chinese history). There are three wonders famous for the exquisite craftsmanship and historical value of Qianling Mausoleum: Stone Carving, Mural Painting and Tri-colored Glazed Pottery (called Tang Sancai in Chinese).

The most attractive stone carving in the mausoleum is Wu Zetian’s stele without words. There is a fine Lion and Horse Carving on a stele: the horse enjoyed its food leisurely, leaning its head down; while the lion stands stately with glaring eyes. Mural Painting is another highlight of Qianling. On the tomb passages, there are many large-scale paintings which present you the imperial life, foreign affairs, sports, military system, and dress & hair style of Tang Dynasty. As rare art treasures, the murals also have its unique artistic feature in composing of picture, model, coloring and so on.

Used frequently as burial objects in Tang Dynasty, the Tang Tri-colored Glazed Pottery is a type of glazed pottery with the dominant colors of yellow, brown and green which were very popular in the Tang Dynasty. Being the treasure of ancient Chinese art, Tang Tri-colored Glazed Pottery features regular and exquisite ethnics, compact carving traces, and smooth lines, indicating the high-level of the craft reached in the Tang Dynasty.
