Jiayuguan International Gliding Base ranks among the best three glider bases along with ones in Australia and South Africa. Top gliders gathering here provide spectators a great opportunity to admire the breathtaking acrobatic flight shows. Visitors can also have a try under the guidance of pilots, admiring panoramic views of the mythical desert.
At the 60,000-square-meter base, there are 8 sport planes, 10 gliders, 2 hot air balloons among other equipment. Apart from gliding, the Base also offers places for tennis, bungee jumping, shooting, and go-karting.
From 22nd to 24th, July 2011, the National Gliding Festival was held in Jiayuguan. The festival represented not just a competition among top athletes, but also a feast for spectators.
When to visit
The best time to visit the base is May to October because during this period, the weather is perfect for visiting Jiayuguan and experiencing gliding activities. There are also many gliding and flying events held from May to October.
Things to do
You can admire top glider pilots jumping and stunt parachuting. If interested, you can also enjoy an air experience flight in a glider under the guidance of pilots, chewing the scenery of the Gobi Desert and Qilian Mountain. To hire a glider costs CNY 500.
