Butterfly Spring

Butterfly Spring is a shallow pool that periodically swarms with countless butterflies. Green trees, crystal clear water and colorful butterflies take you to a wonderful world.

Butterfly Spring is located at the foot of the Yunnong Peak of Cangshan Mountain to the north of Dali. The spring water is as clear as a mirror, with tens of thousands of butterflies seasonally gathering here, dancing all over the sky.

Local Bai legend has it that a pair of star-crossed lovers took their lives at the spring, hoping to spend eternity together, and that their wish was granted: they were transformed into butterflies and return every spring to celebrate their love. The spot remains important to the Bai, who welcome spring every mid-April with song and dance at the spring.

All kinds of flowers bloom in the third and fourth month of every lunar year on Yunnong Peak and that attracts the butterflies. Thousands of butterflies congregate around the Butterfly Spring. Some are as big as a palm, and some are as small as a coin.

The Park of Butterfly Spring contains a Butterfly Museum. The Museum keeps many rare specimens of various butterflies. There is also a Butterfly Pavilion and Butterfly Stele. Climb up the mountainside to enjoy the beautiful sights of Erhai Lake from the pavilion.
