The Palace Museum holds 70 to 80 exhibitions each year, and only small proportions (around 0.5 percent) of collections are displayed due to the museum size limitations. Thus, the Palace Museum decided to launch a four-year project to build a new branch in northern Beijing in order to display more cultural relics.

The new museum will be 25 kilometers from the current one and situated in a scenic spot. Also, it will be environmentally friendly and meet the requirements of conservation. The first phase of the project will occupy an area of 125,000 square meters, which is set to enable exhibitions and restorations of more cultural relics.
