Mount Tianzi Scenic Area or Tianzi Mountain is the one of the four major scenic areas in Wulingyuan Scenic Area, Zhangjiajie. It is situated between Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the Suoxiyu Natural Reserve. Mount Tianzi is renowned by the amazing natural landscape, it embodies varied beautiful scenes at different time within one day and is reputed as “huge bonsai, small fairyland”.
As for the history of the name "Tianzi": in the Song Dynasty, a male leader from Tu Ethnic Group called Xiang Dakun revolted against the local authorities in power. He called himself the Son of Heaven (Tianzi in Chinese) however finally died a martyr there. Hence the mountain was named as Mount Tianzi.
Tianzi Mountain is the product of millions of years of sedimentary rock erosion. Its ancient sandstone peaks have been slowly carved out by water and wind.
Covering 5,400 hectares, the peak Tianzi Peak reaches nearly 1,263 meters above the sea level. Waterfalls, bridges, stone forests and caves are found throughout the scenic area. It contains more than 80 natural platforms to take in the magnificent scenery. The photographers would not miss four different wonderful scenes together with the Mount Tianzi in different period: the foggy clouds, the night with shine moon, the rising sun in daybreak and snow scene in winter. Cloud and fog in Tianzi Mountain creates charming views especially just after the rain, which adds much mysteries to Mount Tianzi.
The best travel season for Mount Tianzi is spring and fall. The Mount Tianzi is also reputed as the King of the Forests and tourists would not miss the Tianzi Mountain if exploring the Zhangjiajie Natural Geopark.
Travelers could take the cable car up the mountain seeing the steep peaks. Main scenic spots in Mount Tianzi Scenic Area include Terrace in the Air, Helong Park, West Sea Stone Forests, Immortal Bridge, Tianzi Peak, Ten-Mile Art Gallery and King’s Writing Brush Peak.
