A dazzling exhibition showcases the peak of ancient Chinese luxury, custom tailoring, and imperial aesthetics, bringing the ultimate historical haute couture to global fashion lovers. Themed Imperial Colors: Qing Dynasty Court Costumes from the Palace Museum, the exhibition runs from July 7 to October 7, 2026, at the World Expo Museum in Shanghai’s Huangpu District. Featuring over 100 exceptionally rare garments worn by Qing emperors, empresses, and concubines, an astonishing 90 percent of the pieces are being displayed outside Beijing for the first time, with 30 percent making their public debut. For international travelers planning their summer China travel itineraries, this blockbuster showcase offers a rare, up-close look at extremely fragile silk textile treasures that are seldom showcased to the public due to the rigorous preservation requirements for protein-based fibers.

The exhibition focuses on historical color palettes derived entirely from natural plants, showcasing diverse garments ranging from grand ceremonial robes to everyday casual wear. One of the most anticipated highlights is the peerless longpao (emperors 12-symbol robe) known as the “peacock-gold robe”. This breathtaking imperial masterpiece features an intricate base of natural iridescent peacock feather threads spread across dark brown satin, embroidered with dragons and cloud motifs in twisted gold thread—creating a shimmering interplay of gold and green under different lighting angles that cannot be fully captured by any digital lens. Visitors can also marvel at a bright red ceremonial robe of the young Emperor Tongzhi crafted with the exquisite kesi (silk tapestry weaving) technique, and stunning traditional jewelry featuring delicate diancui (kingfisher feather inlay) craftsmanship.

To deliver an optimal, immersive viewing experience while prioritizing the protection of these centuries-old treasures, the museum utilizes state-of-the-art climate-controlled cases equipped with specialized non-reflective glass for a clear 360-degree view. Crucially for overseas tourists and independent holidaymakers, bilingual audio guides (Chinese and English) and interactive digital exhibits are readily available on-site to help navigate the deep historical narratives.
