Shanghai has been rated one of top 10 happiest travel destinations in the world, according to a recent survey by The Joy Index this year.

The Joy Index was created in partnership by Bank of America, Conde Nast Traveler and two happiness experts - Shawn Achor, happiness researcher and author of "The Happiness Advantage", and Gretchen Rubin, author of the best-selling book "The Happiness Project."

They explained that the psychology of awe and the physiology of adventure are two main factors to make the travel joyful.

As one of the mega cities in China, Shanghai’s outstanding economic growth is closely linked to people’s happiness in the country. Based on the research, Shanghai residents have gradually grown happier since the early 2000s.

Other top 10 most joyous destinations are Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada; Aarhus, Denmark; Madagascar; Hawaii, U.S.; Bordeaux, France; Telluride, Colorado; Bermuda; Matera, Italy; Houston, U.S..
