Without a railway line and with only one airport within its boundaries, Shangri-La mainly relies on its roads as the main means of transportation. The Yunnan-Tibet Road, Sichuan-Tibet Road and Xikang-Tibet Road all pass through there, bringing more convenience to the local land traffic.
Shangri-La Airport is one of the biggest airports in the northwest of Yunnan Province. Shangri-La Airport offers domestic flights to Kunming, Chengdu, Lhasa, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other major cities. It is the air corridor flying to Kunming, Tibet and Southern Asia countries.
There are two bus stations in Shangri-La. The largest station is on the intersection of Changzhen Road and Jiantang Road. The station has buses to and from most of the tourist destinations.
In Shangri-La, the coach bus is the most important vehicle. Visitors can get to Shangri-La by coach bus from Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Panzhihua. It takes 15 hours by bus from Kunming to Shangri-La, 5 hours from Lijiang to Shangri-La, and 8 hours from Dali to Shangri-La.
The starting price is 5RMB in Shangri-La. The town seat is not big and taxis are not metered by taximeter. Within Shangri-La County the taxi fare is 5RMB.
